Vision from an interview on Kenyan TV in January shows SA Senator Lucy Gichuhi saying her hefty politician’s salary is “not a lot of money”.
“$200,000 Australian dollars… in a whole year that’s not a lot of money,” Senator Gichuhi tells the show’s host.
The clip was shared on social media over the weekend after Ms Gichuhi agreed to pay back thousands of dollars misspent on airfares for relatives.
Ms Gichuhi billed taxpayers $2,139 for airfares from Darwin to Adelaide in October last year ahead of a birthday bash she threw at an Adelaide hotel.
On Sunday she tweeted:
“Regarding the media reports about my travel expenses, this was an administrative error involving misunderstanding of travel rules.
“I’ve raised an invoice from the department to pay the costs of $2139 in full.”
