Police Reveal The Biggest Factor In SA’s Skyrocketing Road Toll

South Australia’s disturbing road toll -- 60 deaths so far this year, compared to 80 for all of 2018 -- comes down to one recurring factor, says the police commissioner.

Commissioner Grant Stevens has told FIVEaa Breakfast:

“I think it’s about complacency. We do so many kilometres on the roads, we’re on the roads every day… you become immune to the risk and that immunity or complacency leaves you open to make poor decisions…

“It might be a subconscious thing but we end up thinking, this won’t happen to me. No one pulls out of their driveway in the morning thinking they’re going to die on the road that day.

“Those deaths and those serious injuries come about as a result of poor decision making most of the time…

“Using your mobile phone. The decision to keep driving when you’re on country roads and you know you’re fatigued… wearing your seatbelt -- don’t take shortcuts.”
