Rod Butterss says his time as president of the St Kilda football club was fuelled by drugs and alcohol.
“(AFL is) a party environment after dark, there’s a lot of drugs,” Butterss told The Footy Show on Thursday night.
“A lot of drugs. A lot of alcohol, a lot of gambling.”
President from 2000-2007, Butterss said he “drank at every opportunity”.
“I have to put my hand up and say, as an alcoholic, during that period, albeit high-functioning, there were times when I had to make decisions about people’s welfare that in hindsight I’m ashamed I wasn’t in the best possible shape to make those decisions,” he said.
“I think the whole Malcolm Blight thing was catastrophic from the outset… we got caught up in the hype, and we got caught up in Malcolm’s charm and charisma, and then 16 weeks later we s— ourselves and fired him,” Butterss said…
“[It] could’ve been done a lot more tastefully, and with dignity, and it should’ve been, the guy’s a legend of the game.”
Rod Butterss has sensationally detailed how his time as president of St Kilda was fuelled by alcohol and cocaine. https://t.co/xp7FB45pon
