Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have both announced that levies on their home brand milks will be passed onto dairy farmers struggling with the drought — but not everyone likes the idea.
Dairy farmer and president of the QLD Dairyfarmers Organisation Brian Tessmann has told 3AW:
“This won’t help much, this is just a flash in the pan.
“We need to give farmers more bargaining power and help them get a fair return out of the market so they aren’t going cap-in-hand to processors and retailers.”
PM Scott Morrison was also reportedly dubious about a levy when it was raised as an option a few weeks ago.
“I don’t want to see people paying any more for milk and I don’t want to see dairy farmers getting ripped off,” he said at the time.
