Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg is frantically seeking advice over possible Hungarian citizenship.
The Australian is reporting Mr Frydenberg may have been made a citizen via his mother. He told the paper:
“As someone who was born in Australia with Hungarian ancestors who arrived in Australia after the Holocaust, I would be required to initiate and undertake a lengthy and formal application and interview procedure in order to be considered a Hungarian citizen.
“Neither I nor anyone on my behalf has ever made such an application or engaged in such a procedure.”
But it is now believed Mr Frydenberg has hired a consultant in Budapest to investigate the possibility. An adverse finding could threaten the government’s slim majority in parliament.
