This petrol station attendant and janitor was proof you don’t need to be a cut throat business person to be wealthy.
A petrol station attendant and janitor… The last person you’d expect to hold an $8 million fortune, right?
But that’s exactly who he was.
At 92 years old, Ronald Reid passed away, leaving behind a multimillion dollar fortune.
So how does a janitor become a millionaire?
Well firstly, he was “unbelievably frugal,” according to his lawyer.
Read used to park really far away from any destination to spare himself having to pay for parking.
He was also renowned for his flannel jacket and baseball cap – he would wear the same clothes all the time to spare himself from having to buy new ones, and the old clothes? He would keep up with pins when they became worn.
He lived in a modest home and drove a modest car (Toyota Yaris), and he would borrow books from the library to keep himself entertained.

In the wake of his passing, Read’s lawyer revealed he also invested in the right shares.
“He only invested in what he knew and what paid dividends. That was important to him,” his lawyer, Laurie Rowell said.
“It’s a matter of living a certain way, keeping your lifestyle under control and being committed.”
If you save approximately $300 a month, you too could attain the same $8 million fortune as Read did in 65 years.
And to top off an incredibly disciplined saving regime story and to the absolute surprise of the recipients, Read’s fortune will go to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and Brookes Memorial Library.
What an amazing story.
