More than 60,000 Australian businesses have signed up for the federal government’s JobKeeper package one day after it was announced, reports Phil Coorey.
Under the $130 billion plan around 6 million workers will receive a flat payment of $1,500 per fortnight through their employer before tax.
Phil told FIVEAA Breakfast’s David & Will on Tuesday:
“It’s a massive safety net… It’s essentially to stop people going under, enable the businesses who have stood them down not to go under, to give them the best chance of starting the engines on the other side of this thing…
“It’s completely extraordinary and unprecedented… nothing like this has ever been done before. It’s a national wage basically.
“In the first hour after they announced it yesterday 8,000 businesses registered — overnight another 60,000 or so. It’s very popular.”
