What Is Burnout And How Should We Manage The Symptoms?

2 min read

It's more common than you think.

Stress and burnout are on the rise. We’re overworked, underpaid and generally unfulfilled in life and work. The daily grind is bringing us down and our brains and bodies are bearing the brunt of it. Our plates are full, to-do-lists never get done and we’re under constant pressure to bring our best selves to every commitment. In the endless pursuit of financial reward, reputational clout and job security, we’re doing ourselves a lot of damage.

Introducing: burnout.

What is burnout?

Burnout is defined as a ‘physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress’. In 2019, the World Health Organisation officially recognised ‘burnout’ as a medical condition. We all know the impact stress can have on our mental health, but it’s easy to forget the physical toll it can take. Symptoms include:

Exhaustion

You’re tired, fed up and drained. Everything is just a bit too much. Go back to bed, life is easier there.

Lack of motivation

Productivity? No ma’am. Remember focusing? Nope, me neither.

Cynicism

Why bother. It’s not like it’s actually going to get me anywhere or achieve anything. Huh.

Isolation

You’re struggling to engage with your work colleagues. You’re socially and emotionally distanced from your friends and saying no to the work perks.

If you’re guilty of any or all of the above, you may be experiencing burnout. What the can you do about it?

A couple of things actually.

  1. Get enough sleep. Easier said than done, sure, but sleep health is so damn important. Life is harder when you’re tired. Rest up and disconnect. You don’t have to be everywhere, all the time.
  2. Don’t overload yourself. That deadline might be important, but so is your health.
  3. Prioritise. Does this really need to be done now?
  4. Ask for help if you need it. Talk to your teachers, bosses, parents, friends, doctor or pharmacist about the best way to manage your stress levels.

Your pharmacist can help you figure out a game plan for how to manage the physical symptoms of burnout.

Stress and burnout are linked to high blood pressure, which can be indicative of further health concerns. A quick and painless blood pressure evaluation test at your local Blooms The Chemist will give you peace of mind.

Your pharmacist will also ask some questions about your lifestyle. This will help gauge your potential risk. They will also help you understand what the numbers mean and give you advice on how to have a happy and healthy 2021.
