Heart Foundation's Call To Action Day – May 7th 2015

2 min read

This is why women should have a heart health check.

Heart disease is the number 1 killer of Australian women.

It kills three times more women than breast cancer. It is often silent, with little warning, before a heart attack, and because of lack of awareness and hesitancy to call 000), half the people who have a heart attack die before they get to hospital.

This is why you need to find out if you are at risk.

For more information visit heartfoundation.org.au or call the free Health Information Service on 1300 36 27 87.

Some of the risk factors:

– High blood pressure increases your risk of heart disease and lowering it will reduce that risk.

– Evidence suggests that to reduce your risk of heart disease your cholesterol level should be less than four, with your LDL or bad cholesterol at 2.5 or even lower if you have other risk factors.

– Your waist circumference is closely linked to heart disease.  For women, your waist measurement should be less than 80cm and for men, less than 94.

– Smoking is a terrible risk factor for heart disease and quitting is the most important step to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Many of the risk factors of heart disease are silent, so unless you check, you will have no way of knowing if you are at risk.

A heart health check is done by your GP and usually takes about 15 minutes. Your doctor will speak to you about your family history, heart disease risks associated with smoking, weight, diet and how physically active you are.

Sue’s Story

At first Sue thought it was just indigestion, but when she decided she would rather look silly than die from a heart attack, she called for help. It seemed impossible that’s what it was – she was living a healthy lifestyle and had no family history. WATCH the report on her story:
