Port Adelaide assistant coach Matty Nicks says there’s no doubt first year rising star Sam Powell-Pepper will need a spell -- but not yet.

“He has bashed in and he’s really gone hard for two rounds,” Nicks told Rowey and Bicks on FIVEaa.

“There’s no doubt he’ll -- at some point -- need a rest… [but] I’m not sure it’s right now.”

LISTEN HERE:

Nicks said Sam needed “other players to stand up for him”...

“We’ll have the discussion as a group along with Burgo about exactly how he’s loads are coming up.

“We’ll give him a bit of a lighter week this week and try and freshen him up into Carlton. No doubt at some point he’ll have to have a rest and we’ll have a look at a week off possibly to freshen him up.”

But he also said there were other options beyond missing a game:

“That’s your first port of call -- what is he doing during the week?

“You don’t want to miss too many sessions because some of the training that you’re doing is working on different structures, different styles of play that you want to do, so it is good to try and keep them out there training.

“But I think for some of your guys who are first, second year in -- that are really starting their careers -- actually having a weekend off is one of the best things you can do for them.”
