Leigh Matthews says Hawthorn’s premiership champs are looking like “hackers” and the club has lost its confidence.

“The names are still there,” Leigh said of the winless Hawks, “but the fact is the Riolis the Rougheads the Gunstons the Breusts -- they just are looking like hackers in the last week or two.”

LISTEN HERE:

“They’ve all of a sudden just lost their confidence,” Leigh said. “They’ve just lost their belief in themselves and their teammates and probably starting to question the system that they work under.”

Leigh said watching the Hawks reminded him of the Brisbane Lions’ struggle to remain competitive in 2005 after making the GF in ’04:

“I saw what happened with the Brisbane Lions -- when you fall of the cliff, sometimes you can fall big time.”

“I’m a great believer of the connection between hope and energy, there is a connection.

“All of a sudden the hope’s gone in the game, they’ve been used to playing in premierships, now we’re struggling to actually be competitive, your energy levels drop off as well.

“That’s what’s happened to Hawthorn.”
