Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s changes to the Australian citizenship test will ensure immigrants deserve the honour, a senior policy advisor says.

“Citizenship is a privilege, it is a very high privilege,” Terry Barnes told Jade Robran on FIVEaa. “All those who come to Australia and seek it need to show that they deserve it. The current citizenship test is pretty basic.”

Mr Barnes said the new values-based approach was an improvement:

“Because it’s actually testing whether that person has got a commitment to the mainstream values we as Australians generally have.

“It also means embracing the society in which we live -- Australian values of tolerance, fair play, giving people a fair go, respecting the rights of others…

“You need to make sure people are fully committed to be Australians in all senses of the word, not just live here.”
