The paper’s feisty front page ran a photo of Xenophon with the headline: ‘NICK OFF - The backwater Senator who’s a threat to us all.’
And in an explosive editorial the paper called SA “Australia’s primary mainland welfare community”.
“If not for wealthier states that actually drive the economy, South Australia would just be one big Centrelink queue,” the paper wrote.
It also referred to the state’s submarine build as a “‘subs for the dole’ program” and claimed the state is so “ill-run that it’s essentially Greece with two AFL teams”.
Nick Xenophon told David and Will the printed rant was “a beauty”…
“There’s fake news, this is just silly news on the part of the Tele,” he said.
Xenophon said his team had blocked the cuts because they would have hurt families, “most of them in New South Wales because it’s the biggest state, that would cop a hiding in terms of their family budget”.
“All we’ve said is there’s a better way to do this.
“All I’m asking the government to do is look at alternatives before you hit low income earners.”
And of course at the end of the interview Xeno had to get the last word in:
“I better Nick off.”
