Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese says hosting the Commonwealth Games would “absolutely outstanding” for the state.

Speculation about who will host the games has been rife after the 2022 event was taken off Durban when its capacity to host was brought into question.

“It’s unprecedented for Commonwealth Games to be back-to-back in the same country… they’re first going to be on the Gold Coast,” Mayor Haese said. “Whether they then go straight on to an Adelaide bid for 2022 is yet to be seen.”

“But down the track, whether it’s 2026 or beyond, I think a Comm Games in Adelaide would be absolutely brilliant, because of tourism, brand, sporting infrastructure -- sport’s part of our DNA… it would be absolutely outstanding. But, look, this is for ultimately another level of government to make that decision.

“But I think all South Australians would love to see a Comm Games in Adelaide at some point… it would be good for the state.

“We’ve got perfect climate, great topography, we’d need to make some investment into infrastructure.

“When it comes to Commonwealth Games they’re not only good for sport but they’re actually good for business. They actually have a positive payback… Comm Games evidently are very good for cities not only on a sporting area but also economically,” he said.
