The Pinus trees are not native to Australia and are “pest free”. If Pine Trees germinate alongside native Gum Trees they have the comparative advantage over the Pine Tree and steal the water the Gum Tree is “harvesting”.
One photo shows a living Gum Tree in the Highbury Aquaduct Land (HAL) with more then one pine tree inside its “Drip Line”. They are stealing it's water.
The other shows a Gum Tree that has been killed by the Pine Trees that grew at its base.
There are many such examples of gum trees being crowded-out by pine seedlings in the HAL.
Recommendation 1: As a high priority, the Pine Trees should be manually removed from around the surviving Gum Trees in the Highbury Aquaduct Land (HAL)
Recommendation 2: Pine Trees of all sizes should be classified as Significant Pests and NOT counted as “Significant Trees”.
