Premier in waiting Jay Weatherill says it's up to Mike Rann if he wants to take up a ministerial position when he steps down as labor leader on October 20.

Mr Weatherill says he's yet to decide what changes he might make to Labor's front bench once he takes over.

Mr Rann won't be drawn on whether he'll stay on in parliament.
