US authorities have issued a tsunami warning for Australia after a massive earthquake struck off the coast of Japan this afternoon.
The warning also extends as far as Chile in South America.

Less than an hour prior to that warning, the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.
Local authorities then re-affirmed at 7.07pm (AEDST) that there was no threat to Australia.
Masses of water have already devastated north eastern Japan with images coming through of whole towns being swept away.
