It looks likely that Andrew Lovett's Football career is over.

St Kilda has sacked Lovett effective immediately. It comes a day after the 27 year old midfielder was charged with rape following an alleged incident in Port Melbourne in December

Lovett's Lawyers informed him of the decision this morning. He'd been suspended indefinitely by the Saints while the rape allegations were investigated.

At a press conference today St Kilda officials said Lovett had engaged in a series of acts and omissions that were in breach of his contract and bought the club into disrepute.

Lovett's rape charge follows a two month investigation and comes after he was arrested for public drunkeness in November.

Saints coach Ross Lyon admits it has been a distraction but he has defended the decision to recruit Lovett from Essendon saying the club could never have seen what was coming.

The Saints insist their decision is not based on whether Lovett in innocent or otherwise. He is due to front court on Friday.

Footballers who involve themselves in this sort of behaviour same as the Geelong player and I think every club has its bad apples, I think the full force of the law is now required if guilty he must serve the time in gaol that the ordinary person on the street would get for the same offence. If he does then that may curb some of the off field behaviour of players in other codes, well at least until the next time.

Despite what Rowie & Cornesy say, St Kilda have every right to sack him. Too much money and too much time on their hands, coupled with a lack of maturity, sees so many young footballers come 'unstuck'. When will they ever learn that their success comes with a certain level of responsibility. If they can't live up to these expectations, then it's DCM as far as I'm concerned.

i dont think saint kilda had any choice but to sack him but they are now a player short on their list as luke ball went to collingwood for free,a little bit of egg on their face from both ways?
