South Australian MP Penny Wong is about to become a mum.

Wong's partner Sophie Allouache is expecting the couple's first child in December this year. The baby was conceived using donor sperm from a man known to the pair and using IVF treatment.

Ms Wong says she will be keeping the identity of the child's father a secret due to her high profile position and the public interest that creates.

Penny Wong is the first openly gay federal minister and is expected to play a major part in the debate into the legalisation of same sex marriage at the ALP conference later this year.
