New Zealand salvage crews say they've passed the halfway mark, in their efforts to pump oil from a stranded container ship in the Bay of Plenty.

About 350-tonnes of fuel oil have spilled from the vessel since it hit a reef nearly three-weeks ago.

Volunteers have been clearing the beaches of the washed up oil and rescuing effected wildlife.
