State Labor is facing two by-elections in the seats of Ramsay and Port Adelaide, with the upcoming retirements of Mike Rann and Kevin Foley.

The duo are both standing down from Cabinet on October 20 when new premier Jay Weatherill takes over.

Political commentators are confident both seats will remain in Labor hands.

It's believed other senior party members, including Transport Minister Pat Conlon, are also contemplating their future.

Politics expert Professor Hayden Manning says the government would be reluctant to lose Mr Conlon as well.

"I think the case of Mr Conlon is interesting. I predict he will stay on because he's the one involved in some of the big infrastructure projects and the last thing a new premier would want are things going wrong with those projects."
