The Computer Gaming Industry is calling for Australia to come into line with international standards and create an R18+ classification for the gaming industry. Currently the highest classification is MA15+.

The Commonwealth government have released a discussion paper which lists the arguments for and against an R18+ classification for computer games. The government has now opened a public consultation on the subject and is calling for submissions.

The R18+ classification would allow more games with Adult content to be introduced into Australia, and see some games re-classified from MA15+ to R18+ . Gaming Industry representatives believe the new classification will provide clarification to consumers about  game content and offer more choice to the Australian gaming community.

Do you think Australia needs games depicting adult themes? Should consumers have the choice to determine what they believe is appropriate game content or should the government continue its current regulation of the industry?

For more information on the public consultation go the the Attorney General's website. http://www.ag.gov.au/gamesclassification
