Further mass sackings are expected as early as tomorrow, as Qantas becomes the next major company to shed staff.

It's understood engineers, based at Avalon in Victoria, could be next in line to lose their jobs .

It follows this week's decision by ANZ to axe 1000 jobs, while the future of 600 Alcoa workers in Geelong remains in serious doubt.
