The Australian Football League (AFL) announced that five players and one member of the media had been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
The late Horrie Gorringe, who dominated football in Tasmania in the early part of the century, was inducted alongside four of the greats of the modern game whose careers ran in virtual parallel – Brownlow Medallists Nathan Buckley, James Hird, Mark Ricciuto and Michael Voss. Tony Charlton, one of the towering figures of the early part of the game’s history on television, was inducted in the category of media representative at tonight’s Australian Football Hall of Fame dinner at the Palladium Room in Melbourne.
The Australian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1996 and serves to recognise players, coaches, umpires, administrators, and media representatives who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian football.

Background on the new inductees follows and all previous inductees and Legends of the Game are listed in the 2011 AFL Record Season Guide, from page 578 onwards. There was no inductee in the Legend category for this year, as the charter of the Hall of Fame states that no more than 10 per cent of the membership may be considered as ‘Legends’.
Separately, it was announced that Michelangelo Rucci, Stephen Phillips and Bruce McAvaney had been formally appointed to the Hall of Fame Selection Committee following endorsement of the AFL Commission. Tom Reynolds, Tim Lane and Leigh Whicker have each retired as selectors, after service over many years, and were congratulated for their contribution to the Hall of Fame induction process.
