Geelong coach Mark Thompson has asked the club to allow him to take a 3 month break to consider his future, but has told Geelong CEO Brian Cook that he will not be accepting a role at Essendon.
In a press conference at Geelong, Cook confirmed that Thompson had been approached by Essendon but would not be on the Bombers coaching staff next year.
Cook said Thompson was suffering from "burn out" and wants to assess his coaching career over the next few days. Thompson is considering giving up coaching.
The Geelong CEO hoped Thompson would continue at Geelong for season 2011 but requires an answer from Thompson before Trade Week.
Thompson's decision to comtemplate his coaching future has come as a shock to players and highlights the enormous demands placed of modern day AFL coaches.
Meanwhile, Cook said he expected a decision from Gary Ablett on his future by the end of the week.
