State Liberal backbencher Michael Pengilly is under fire from his own party after labelling Prime Minister julia Gillard a real dog' on Twitter.

Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond says the comments were comments were inappropriate and unacceptable and she'll 'counsel' the Member for Finniss.

Mr Pengillysays the context of his tweet wasn't smart and he made an apology in Parliament.

"Anyone who knows me knows that I do not abuse women, hit them or anything else."
