Cantina
The Vagabond
Garden of Unearthly Delights
Until Feb 27

Rating:  ***** Sensational

From the opening strains of “I’ll Shoot the Moon” to the final frenzy of Charlston-esque dance, Cantina is a near perfect piece of entertainment.

The four male and two female performers are at once acrobats, musicians, story tellers and provocateurs. Their skills, whether on tightrope, broken glass or tiny acrobatic platform or as good as any you’ll see.

But this is so much more than a human circus act. Great thought has gone into crafting a themed performance, framed by an evocative early 20th century soundscape and fleshed out by artful choreography and costumes faithful to a bygone era.

There’s humour, wit and style in every detail and even some dark undertones of sadomasochism as the various stars strut their stuff in spectacular fashion.

There is something deeply pleasurable about seeing a show a second time and enjoying it even more than the first. Cantina debuted in the Garden last year to great acclaim and has been wowing overseas audiences ever since. You shouldn’t miss its 2012 Adelaide bloom.
