After a 17 day wait, Julia Gillard has scored the job as Prime Minister of Australia.
Following days of constant wrangling with three independents Gillard has become the nation's first elected female PM.
The decision was announced at about 3:30pm today after a press conference where Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor announced they'd side with Labor.
But it wasn't without its dramas with third independent Bob Katter announcing a few hours before the press conference that he would back Tony Abbot and the Coalition.
He said the removal of Kevin Rudd from Labour was a key factor in his decision and that he might have changed his mind if Julia Gillard hadn't muscled Rudd out.
He said he "went for Queensland, I went for my tribe, my homeland" in making his decision.
But in the end he was overruled, with Oakeshott and Windsor back Labor thanks to a comprehensive regional package that will benefit rural Austalia.
Windsor was the first to announce his siding with Labor, cutting to the chase quickly and then giving his reasons for his decision.
Labor's broadband plan was a big deciding factor for Windsor, along with consideration of which parliament would stay in power the longest.
"This isn’t about philopshy. That died about a decade ago or probably longer," Windsor said.
"This is about using the political system to advantage those people we represent in country Australia."
Oakeshott drew his announcement out like an Australian Idol judge announcing that year's winner, banging on about his family and regional Australia.
He risked taking the 17 day wait for a new PM into its 18th day with his nearly 30 minute rant.
But in the end he backed Gillard, emphasising it was "an absolute line ball judgement call" and that he favoured Labor's regional package.
He reiterated that no party would have dominance in the new government and that it would take some getting used to and contribute to a new political landscape.
"There are no sneaky cigar backroom systems in this," Oakeshott said.
"This has been an open process by us and even if you don't like a decision please accept we've given it our best."
