Australian Red Cross has launched an appeal following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake 15 kms off the Haitian coast at approximately 5.00 pm local time on 12 January 2010. Local and international Red Cross personnel staff and volunteers are providing relief in the most needed areas.

The funds raised through this appeal will be used to:

- support emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery activities for communities affected by the disaster in Haiti

- send specialist aid workers to assist in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement response

- support longer-term Red Cross programs of assistance in the affected areas.

Other humanitarian organisations are also calling for donations to help the people of Haiti.
