A cabinet meeting today in Canberra will discuss Australia's border protection policy. The government is set to adopt a tougher position on the asylum seeker issue.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has signalled her government will take a tougher approach on illegal boat arrivals. Border Patrols are expected to increase and other coutries in the region will be asked to take a greater role dealing with the issue. Ms Gillard wants a community debate on asylum seekers declaring people with concerns should not be branded as racist.

Ms Gillard is tipped to sell the tougher stance in electorates where there has been the most criticism of the governments policy, but opposition leader Tony Abbott says the Prime Minister can't be trusted,

"She is telling the public what they want to hear in the hope that the public will be tricked."

The Governments new approach is expected to be announced as early as tomorrow.
