Prime Minister Julia Gillard is calling on the Labor Party to reverse its policy and allow uranium exports to India.

The proposed change will dominate discussions at Labor's national conference in Sydney next month.

India isn't a signatory to the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty, but Ms Gillard insists guarantees would be in place to ensure the uranium isn't used for weapons.

And Trade Minister Craig Emerson says sending uranium to India would be a huge windfall for the economy.

"India itself is looking to pick up its use of nuclear energy from about 4% up to about 40% of its energy use. This would bea very, very big market so it involve hundreds if not thousands of new jobs for Australians."
