Julia Gillard is sticking to her guns on same sex marriage, despite one of the world's most influencial celebrities weighing in on the issue.
Lady Gaga, in town for a flying promotional visit, was asked about how she felt about gay marriage still being illegal here in Australia. Gaga is a known campaigner for same sex marriage over in the states and had the same view about how we should handle it here.
"I would just encourage all of you to mobilise your voices so that the Prime Minister of Australia can hear you scream and speak and say that we want to be fully equal."
Julia Gillard was today confronted with the superstar's opinion but wasn't moved saying "I do have a different view to Lady Gaga, I do understand this is a big area for a community debate and it's an area of debate within parliament as well."
"We've moved to equalise the treatment of same sex couples under federal law, like social security law and superannuation law but my view is we should keep the marriage act the way it is at the moment, so I'm not on the same page as Lady Gaga on this one."
This comes as the first openly gay MP here in South Australia, Ian Hunter, has decided to take legal action against the Federal Government.
He was denied the certificate required to marry overseas when he applied to marry his partner in New York where it's now legal.
