FIVEaa's weekend gardening and lifestyle expert Michael Keelan has won a long running battle to have the Carmelite Fountain at the top of Glen Osmond Road switched back on.

The fountain, at the gateway to Adelaide for tourists arriving from eastern states, was switched off several years ago amid Transport Department claims it used over a million litres of water a year.

The host of Adelaide's number one rating weekend breakfast program led the fight to overturn the decision and in the process discovered the fountain only used between 100 and 250 thousand litres annually.

"The government is to be applauded for listening to common sense," Mr Keelan said today. "If the fountain was to be left switched off, the government should've demolished it."

FIVEaa General Manager Paul Bartlett says, "This is another example of the power of talkback radio, personalities who believe in the issues they fight for and FIVEaa's ability to make Adelaide a better place."

Having worked in the "Department" for 38 years, I understand what you had to go through. Good on you for staying with it and using your media power. Unfortuneately the Government has a lot of little people who have too much power and are yet to experience the real world.

Well done to MIchael & all of the 5AA gardening team. About time somevbody knocked some sense into our 'non-sensical' politicians. Typical of the bureacrats - madness has been shoved in the corner. But for how long? Keep yr sledge hammer ready just in case.

Well, Michael I reckon you should take up the fight for mature aged &/or disabled people who are unable to stand for long periods of time to water their lawns. I have relatives in a retirement village. Their 94 yr old neighbour was feeling unwell & decided to do the 'UNTHINKABLE' & use her sprinkler because it had been over 40oC all week & she wanted to water her lawn @ night. Well guess who knocked on her door? YEP the SA Water Nazi's. Honestly this sweet little lady has probably never done a thing wrong in her life & her only enjoyment is her garden. Where the devil is commonsense? Are the Govt. trying to 'bump off' the infirm, elderly & disabled with this ridiculous rule of 'No Sprinklers'? Surely retirement villages should be able to get a permit or waiver to help their residents?????????????????? Food for thought me thinks. Cheers Min.
