A Tasmanian professor has called for elephants and Komodo dragons to be introduced into Australia.

Professor David Bowman says we have no major herbivores here, and feral grasses are destroying the outback.

He says elephants would help to keep the vegetation under control, while Komodo dragons could control the feral pig and goat population.

He says kangaroos, wombats and koalas don't have the ability to keep these things under control.
