Seriously, you would think that the only people who vote in this country are women and men (married only to each other) with 2.4 children (maybe 4.4 children if they were quick on the baby bonus) and spend approximately 8.5 hours at work each day (and by work I mean in real jobs - none of this Home Duties because really, is that work?)(insert your own sarcasm here)...

The rest of us - the single, the unemployed, the homeless, the illiterate and students - just to name a few, are conveniently overlooked.

So this is the perspective of a somewhat intelligent single female who is over the crap; over the blah blah blah that is election talk and over the heated discussions about Julia Gillard's current hair style.

Do you know what I would love to see?  Some straight talking.  Some credibility. Some action.

I would also love to see the basic needs of all Australians taken care of.  You know - the fundamentals such as feeling safe in the community, somewhere warm to sleep at night, enough food to eat, free medical care and education and equality for all our citizens.  Real equality-all citizens. It's not rocket science people.  And don't get me started on taking care of the needs of our planet and the complete farce that is our tax system.

So - the sixty four million dollar question is... can any of the major political parties provide answers and action.

They would like us to think so.  The ALP wants us to Move Forward.  The Libs want us to Stand Up.  I want them to Step Up.

I have to admit - it is hard to move forward when I am still stuck in the past.  I had just started Uni when the Hawke government introduced the HECS system which I was still paying off 7 years after I left (even with no degree) and I also had to watch my Mum struggle to pay the mortgage when interest rates hit 17.5%.  And don't think I have forgotten about some of the Liberal and Howard decisions in recent history.  The treatment of David Hicks was outrageous and I am still waiting for stamp duty and other taxes to be abolished now that the GST is a way of life.

And so - in the interest of all the other Non-Working Non-Families I will be keeping an eye on the policies and promises being made during this pre-election just to see who really can Step Up.

Let the lies, I mean fun begin!
