Calls have intensified for asylum seekers to be processed on Australian soil, after the High Court ruled the Malaysian swap deal unlawful.
Plans to send 800 detainees to the Asian country have been quashed, but Australia will still take in 4000 genuine refugees from Malaysia.
Pino Miglorino from The Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia says Australia can easily accomodate them.
'In comparison to the nature of our immigration program and the issue of refugees across the world, these are really small numbers. We would do it far more efficiently and far better by processing them on Australian soil."
Malaysian authorities have made it clear that they are still keen to work with Australia to stamp out people smuggling.
