Australia’s Jesinta Campbell has finished second runner-up in the 59th edition of the annual Miss Universe pageant held in Las Vegas today. The title went to Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete followed by Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps placing first runner-up.
A panel of celebrities judged the 83 women modelling in national costumes, swimsuits and evening gowns. The final five were then judged on how well they answered an interview question. Miss Australia drew a question about the topic of banning the burqa and whether governments should have a say in determining what women wear.
Tipped as a favourite to win this year’s event, Campbell’s national costume attracted criticism locally, featuring high heeled ugg boots, a bolero jacket and a Spanish style skirt. The 19-year-old Australian goes home with the Miss Congeniality title after making the top five alongside competitors from Jamaica, Mexico, Ukraine and the Philippines.
Navarrete is Mexico’s second Miss Universe, replacing Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela.
