Commenting on the squads, NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said:

“The Australia one-day squad continues to recognise the outstanding performances of the side in international cricket over the last 12 months. It is the same squad that won the ODI series in New Zealand earlier this year, except that Shaun Marsh has recovered from injury and returns to the side in place of Adam Voges.”

“Adam is very unlucky to miss selection having had only limited opportunities last season, but Shaun deserves to return to the side and he gives us very good options at the top of the order in one-day cricket.

“The squad also contains Steve Smith who continues to develop into a very exciting all-rounder in all forms of the game for Australia.

“The Twenty20 squad is the same as the one which recently reached the final of the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, however Tim Paine has been omitted since the NSP felt it wasn’t necessary to have a second keeping option for such a small number of matches. While it was disappointing to lose the ICC World Twenty20 final, Australia has made great progress in Twenty20 cricket in the last 12 months, winning an extremely high percentage of our games and of course being the only undefeated side in the tournament until the final.

“With respect to Australia A, the  NSP views this as an extremely important series of matches as Australia works to ensure its healthy position in world cricket in all three forms of the game. As with recent seasons, we have taken the opportunity to reward the performance of some our more experienced players while blooding and giving further international exposure to our very promising young players who will be so important to Australia's future.

“The squads contain two players from the victorious Australia under-19 squad in Josh Hazelwood and Mitch Marsh who both have very exciting futures.

“The squads feature some very exciting young fast bowling talent in Josh Hazelwood, James Pattinson, Peter George and Mitchell Starc. It also includes the welcome return of Ben Hilfenhaus, giving him the opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the Test series against Pakistan in England.

“The squad also recognises the high standard of performance of experienced players such as Michael Klinger and Ed Cowan and features some of our best young batting talent in the country, including captain George Bailey, Usman Khawaja, Peter Forrest and Mitch Marsh.”

Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said:

“Ben Hilfenhaus is making good progress with his knee tendon injury. As part of his rehabilitation he has commenced bowling and has spent some time at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence during the past week. So far he has coped well and if his progress continues with an increasing bowling workload over the coming weeks, he’ll take his place for Australia A against Sri Lanka A in preparation for possible selection in the Test squad.”

“Peter Siddle is recovering well from a lower back stress fracture sustained during the Australian summer. However it was felt that there was too big a risk for his to return for the tour of England and Ireland, particularly with the important 12 months coming up. Peter remains on target to return to the playing field at the start of the Australian domestic summer.

“Brett Lee is recovering from the elbow muscle injury that he picked before the ICC World Twenty20 and is yet to commence bowling.”
