Prime Minister Julia Gillard is failing in her task to win Australians over to her carbon tax.

That's according to the latest poll conducted by Galaxy for News Limited.

68% of those surveyed say the tax will leave them worse off, while 63% think Ms Gillard should call an early election on the issue.

Meanwhile the Gillard Government will formally announce extra powers for the Consumer and Competition Commission to monitor the carbon tax.

Companies using the tax as an excuse to increase prices will face a penalty of more than $1 million.

While individuals caught doing the wrong thing will be fined $200,000.

How can you tust a person who clearly stated she would not introduce a carbon tax, until the greens told her too. ( Who is the real govt. of Australia). Combine this with the Flood levy and the small handout I am getting back as a pensioner ($4 per week) is a pittance and does not cover the expected increases. Companies have set profit margins on the grocery lines they produce, and they will maintain these profits to maintain their staffing levels, ( or lay staff off) so they will pass the tax they have to pay onto us consumers.
How much of the money raised from "the big polluters is going to 3rd world countries to fight their carbon problem?
Lets wait until USA, China, India make a worthwhile effort to reduce carbon before we go down this track. Don,t forget this is the same government that stuffed up the pink batts programme and the cash for schools, how can we trust them this time.
