About 11,000 homes in quake devastated Christchurch lost power for about hour overnight, after another powerful aftershock.

The 5.4 magnitude tremor struck just after 10.30pm local time and was followed by about a dozen more rumbles during the night.

The bigger quake shut down two large substations, cutting power to the western suburbs for an hour but caused no further damage.
