AFL matches and first class cricket games will be played at a redeveloped Adelaide Oval within three years.

That's under a new deal between the state government, the SA Cricket Association and the SANFL.

The government will provide 450 million dollars with a formal contract to be signed next July.

The development will increase the seating at the oval to 50 thousand.

It'll also include a pedestrian bridge across the Torrens to link the oval with the Railway Station and adjacent North Terrace tram stop and parking facilities

The investment will allow for AFL, cricket, soccer and rugby games to be played there.

The Crows and Power will play their home games at Adelaide Oval, but training and admin will remain at their current locations.

Premier Mike Rann says construction will start within 24 months, while the project is set to be finished within 5 years.

What a disgrace, to destroy our beautiful Adelaide Oval, what a tragedy this will be! How stupid will the Oval look with these massive concrete stands and then the 1880's scoreboard will be there looking so old and irrelevant and small by comparison to the 3 tiered stands!

And by the way, FIFA rules state that all world cup stadia MUST be all seater stadiums! So no World Cup Games for Adelaide then!!!

If the govt can find $450 million, the SANFL will get at least $250m from selling the land, there's $700m, you are almost 70% there of the cost for a new covered stadium, that we will all be lusting for, when on a cold, wet, windy June night in 2015 there will be 50,000 fans at Adelaide Oval wishing we had a roof!!

I think it is an impressive set up but it looks ugly the stands seem seperate and don't compliment each other, it will be fine for AFL football but would fall well short of anything that FIFA would want to hold the world cup.
And if they are thinking of supplying a stadium for world cup soccer then they really need grand stands to go all the way around the ground and possibly they need to accomodate 60000 spectators with seating for all, and with a covered roof.

The liberal plan makes more sense, why are THE MEDIA all getting excited over a bodge up vision. Adelaide oval 50% will get wet (great) viewing angles will be poor for 40%, parking will be bad, shared tenants, lots of hurdles, not fifa compliant. New stadium built from the ground up, modern, fully enclosed, steep viewing angles, parking, not shared with cricket, fifa compliant this is RANN SPIN at it best. DONT GET SUCKED IN!!!! once the land in the west has gone to build an hospital for $2 billion that adds no beds to the health system we lose our opportunity to develop something along the lines of melbourne a complete entertainment vision for the people - THIS IS A BAD VISION IN FACT IT IS NOT EVEN VISIONARY

I am excited about footy coming back to the city, ease of access via train and bus, do we need that much parking? Able to go into the city before and after to enjoy what Adelaide has (Not much in the city really) able to sit by the river feeding the ducks enjoying the day.
What i dont like
Yes no parking for those who can't easily get a bus or train, not under cover, well do we really need fifa, it only happens once? I dont think there is lots of hurdles unless they start atheletics there.
I still think the Liberals (and I'm not a voter) idea as far more attractive.
Maybe keep Adl Oval for SANFL and cricket and build a new complex and let Port have it as a home ground, after all the crows have one and they will both have a AFL compliant training ground.
Then the real Magpies can have their home back and the power will rise (no im not a power supporter) as been in the city have better conditions and then have a chance to be part of Adelaide in the city. After all it was the crows who wanted to go out into the distance and not be part of Adelaide.
Let us have our version of the MCG, SCG, Perth and Brisbane. Have a ground we can all be proud of.

Wilbur Listen to the interview with FFA Chief Executive Ben Buckley on the Sports Show. He had seen the plans and believes the proposal t o be FIFA compliant. He Stated FIFA requires 45,000 seats, there is no issue with the open area at the scoreboard end. Ultimately there would need to be temporary seating like they use at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne for soccer games.

I'm a fan of the Adelaide Oval proposal but I'd be happy with a new stadium too... As long as we have a facility in the City for AFL football.

Never liked the 'circus tents' stand on the eastern side of the oval! DO NOT like the 'proposed' new design for the roof or the gaps in the corners between the stands.

I am neither here nor there when it comes to extremes regarding modern or Heritage design, but I really think it should be more like the Bradman Stand than 'circus tent' or similar styles. Yes, make the facilities modern, 'State of the Art' or whatever but try to keep it looking like 'Olde World'.

55-60 thousand should be the capacity if The Crows & other big drawing teams are going to feature there

If it's going to have tall Light Towers - paint them GREEN to blend in with the trees instead of silver/metal colour!

I work in Public Transport & I think it needs improving (including access to the city for buses), as does Parking - especially If we want to attract interstate & overseas visitors. Entry fees (for parking too) need to be kept down. I love watching the Crows, but many of us can't afford to take a family to see the them now!

A redeveloped oval could be a great thing...IF ALL the BOXES are ticked!

Consider - if the premise is that a stadium in the city will attract more people, then where are they going to sit (for Crows games)?

Crows members do not relinquish their memberships (seats), there is a waiting list to get seats. If you want to seat more people you will need more seats - it's pretty simple isn't it?

This problem is not faced by port, 50,000 is a good size for them to grow into, but for the Crows, 50,000 (assuming that the same number of seats as now is held for purchasing by non-members), 50,000 means about 2,000 members will lose their seats (memberships).

What is the problem if people who have bought their memberships don't turn up? The seat is still sold (and sell it again at 1/4 time for 1/2 price if there's a no-show! gee - that was hard!) People get sick (and as the members get older this will happen more), people have to work, people have family commitments, etc, etc, etc.

The fact is, the Crows could sell another 10,000 seated memberships if those seats were available - they already have a waiting list to start off with (and how many more are there who would join but won't bother with a waiting list).

If the new stadium is to tick ALL the boxes, then ALL parties need to be happy, and the LARGEST tenant of the oval, BY FAR will be the Crows - the only party that will not only have no advantage in the move, but will actually suffer a loss in memberships.

h20sdavid, if you want to sit by the Torrens and feed the ducks and smell the flowers you can do it now, you do not need a re-developed Adel Oval to do it .Let them do what they doing to Adel Oval now without spending the $450m, and give the Power their license back and let them go to Adel oval without the SANFL propping them up, and see how long they last, then all the money ($7m) the SANFL have propped this club up with over the years can be used on the developement of AAMI and junior football in our schools.

Hearing the Crow supporters whinging.. !!! Well the answer is staring everyone in the face,... 2 ovals AAMI seats 60000 rebadged crow park. & let Port have their own oval. We do not feel welcome at AAMI which is basically the Crows home ground just redecorated for Port every so often. Give us our own oval!!! Away from the crows & see Ports crowd numbers increase:)
