It's claimed Holden will need about $200 million to keep its Elizabeth plant open.

Premier Jay Weatherill revealed yesterday that General Motors is considering closing its Adelaide operation unless there's financial help forthcoming from the state and federal governments.

Professor John Spoehr from Adelaide Uni says GM may decide another country is more profitable for them.

"It's difficult to know exactly, it depends on other bidders. What's going on at the moment in the international car industry is you've got countries like India and Indonesia that are pretty aggresively bidding to be the location of major auto facilities."
