A four year old girl has suffered horrific head injuries after a dog attack in Melbourne.

The child was inside her home at Pakenham around 7.30 last night when one of the family dogs mauled her.

In a separate dog attack in Sydney, a 6 year old boy and his grandmother are in hospital after being injured by the woman's Staffordshire Bull terrier.

Inspector Harry Goadings says when the grandmother tried to pull the dog off the boy, it turned on her.
 

"He suffered pretty severe lacerations to his abdomen, to his his face, the bridge of his nose, his shoulder. All these wounds to his body required surgery which is happening as we speak. His grandmother was unfortunately also a victim in this matter, she sustained a laceration to her forearm."
