Dozens of pilot whales are stranded in New Zealand.

Rescuers say 39 have survived the night but 34 have died and 27 have made their way back out to sea.

About 100 whales beached themselves on the northern coast of New Zealand's South Island yesterday in the third mass stranding of the summer.
