Hi there,

My name is Richard Egan and i have a facebook page to bring back the Birdman Rally and the Milk Carton Regatta that use to be icons of Adelaide.
An interview was conducted on Channel 10 News with Ken Rolland to speak about The Birdman Rally and the Facebook page was shown.
I would like to get more media onto this as from the Facebook sight the are so far 229 member and growing and there are comments from people wanting it back.

The Facebook page is as follows:

"Petition to bring back the Birdman Rally and the Milk Carton Regatta"

Hope to hear from you soon.

Richard Egan

I well remember helping my son and three of his mates build a boat to paddle in the milk carton regatta at the Patawalonga. I had literally many hundreds of smelly milk cartons at my place which all had to be sealed with glue so that water couldn't enter, then they had to be glued together. We had a ball doing it and the lads learned a little about design when they decided a catamaran was the way to go. Needless to say the four of them got within maybe 30 metres of the finish line when the 'Amscol Express' came apart and left them wading back to shore.
The event was cancelled when the waters of 'The Pat' became too polluted. It would be wonderful if it could be re-introduced.

If it comes back I will save milk cartons for someone.

It would be great but from memory the insurance costs have always stopped any attempt to revive these great fun days.

Ain't that the truth. The litigious society we now live in is putting a dampener all too many recreational activities.

Yeah, bring those 2 great SA events...
I'm sure I saw a birdman rally last year somewhere on the east coast, so I'm not sure the problem is insurance, but that is what we are led to believe...
Couldn't the milk carton regatta be run on West Lakes?

Excellent work not long ago my housemate and i were discussing the what ever happened to's?

I think that was the fist one that we jinxed each other on.

Glenelg Council would've been crying after having to lose that event.

South Australia and maybe the whole of Australia
lost what was a brilliant event for the media to cover.

I think they have some still in other states ?

Spoton aussieDave and others.

It becomes a massive liability issue even if the water was A grade.

Nowadays with all this legal red tape even the most fun and simplest things in life have become litigation concerns.

In which case if anyone from AAMI, SGIC, Aliance etc is reading see if you can run it up the flagpole for us eh ? make good advertising cmonnn gotta makeup for the footy moving.

These entrants and spectators will need full liability coverage to the tune of whatever the WCS covered by policy would allow for.

Disclaimers at entry help cut the hassles eg cams agreement lol.

If they could sponsor the event by taking care of the legals no doubt SA would be forever gratefull.

As that would be one less issue to stress over.

Meanwhile finding a suitable site is an issue.

Problem with West Lakes is same issue as the pat theres storm water inlets aprox every km even weeks after stormwater entry if i were a council or insurer eeeek the risk factor is

bah bloody yard limit the other thing is the polution it causes eg torn cartons that windup sinking it would give dive crews something to do in that respect PET bottles are better in one way.

Only thing is injury potential even with milk cartons the judges must have turned away some that were just to dangerous on the participant?

Hmm might pay to catchup with organisors of the event prior if they can be found?

They'd know what to expect technicalities wise.

PET bottles would be to dangerous on the participant i think.

Interesting quandry yet something tells me in re to polution that the regatas i seen were on the yara?

Or the Barton is it in Brisbane? Bah can't remember.

In any case those sites also have just as much
stormwater entry if not more than West Lakes.

Bah what am i on about we got the rowing and dragon boat races and the Schools thingo.

I think a discliamer to those attending should cover it nicelly :-)

But if the insurance companies would still like to
make certain of the fact pretty please do.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the comments and support that you have given to this and how much interest it has got on here and Facebook.

I must admit it is good to hear that people do remember it as a kid sitting there with there Humphry Bear ice cream..haha!

I think that yes there maybe a few issues with the insurance, but there must be a way that there is a waiver put into place???

Melbourne do have on and that is sponsored by RED BULL i think?!

Where has all the fun gone out of Adelaide i think media just want to boost what the know is a sure thing! well this would be!

Maybe they should go interstate and see the crowds that theirs pulls in!! a huge amount!

We i think were the first to have the regattas and now melbourne once again has nailed us!!!!!!

I think that there is a serious problem when we can get an icon of Adelaide like SKYSHOW but not this!

You people talk about insurance issues what about that!! i remember going years ago and having parts of the burnt fireworks dropping from the skys!

Also what was the insurance like when the fireworks were let off of the Morphette Street Bridge the other night??

I think it would be a great idea to get Leon Byner or Amanda Blair onto this they are the ones that know people in Adelaide.

If you are reading this from 5AA please email me i would love to put this to the listeners or have a poll on the site??

Sadly, I think you're right. This is the biggest obstacle I can see in bringing it back. I hope commonsense prevails and we once again see the Birdman Rally.
